Who wrote the book of Esther in the bible


The Book of Esther is a text in the Old Testament or Hebrew bible known as Tanakh or Miqra, in Jewish tradition one of The Five Scrolls, which is read in the synagogue in connection with special Jewish holidays. The events described in the book of Esther form the background for the Jewish feast


The author remains unknown, although Mordecai, Ezra and Nehemiah have been suggested. Whoever wrote Esther had a detailed knowledge of Persian customs, manners, and history, and was particularly familiar with the palace at Shushan .


The brave Esther grew up as an orphaned refugee in a foreign land, but ended up as queen of the powerful Persian Empire. The Jewish girl is remembered for saving her people from extinction. The Jewish festival of Purim has its origins in the .

The story of Esther is about what happened when the Jews were in exile in the Persian Empire. Here they had been taken by the Babylonians after the fall of Jerusalem in 587 BC.

The Book of Esther, written approximately in 470 B.C, unfolds at a time when the people of Judah were captives in a strange land and were feeling hopeless. According to Esther 2: 5 - 6, we read: "Now in Shushan the palace there was a certain Jew, whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite; 6Who had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captivity which had been carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away.
