Updated: Aug 10, 2024

Haman a descendant of the Amalekites

Hated Mordecai

- During the transit of Israel to the promise land, they came across a wicked tribe called the Amalekites and God promised to destroy them in future.

- king Saul was instructed to destroy them all during his reign as king but he killed some and spared some.

- King Nebuchadnezzar captures Jerusalem and takes them captive and they are to stay in captivity for 70 yrs before returning to their land.

- Mordecai is one of the captives, and is in the land of susa, working at the palace of Shushan as a gateman. He has with him his uncle's daughter Esther who is a complete orphan.

- Haman is a descendant of the remnants of the Amalekites so he is without doubt an enemy of the Jews. He too works at the palace of Shushan He becomes angry when he discovers that Mordecai a jew refuses to bow to him as others. (Esther 3:5)

- Instead of facing Mordecai alone, he decides to eliminate the whole Jewish family probably bcoz of the history of events between the Amalekites and the Jews during the reign of king Saul.

- God paves the way for Esther to ascend to the position of queen at the Shushan palace so that she can be the instrument used to bring deliverance to the Jews.

- Through Esther, God eliminates Haman and the Jews are free.

- The book of Esther was written in 460- 331 BC to record the origins of the feasts of Lots or Purim.

The feast of Lots or Purim is a joyous celebration to remember how the Jews were saved from the massacre during the Persian empire.
