*Devotional: Starting Your Day with the Holy Spirit*
*Scripture: Ephesians 5:18*
_“And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.”_
*Reflection*
How you start your day shapes how you live your day.
We wake up and fill ourselves with coffee, news, stress, and to-do lists. Paul gives us a better option: _“be filled with the Spirit.”_
That word “filled” is present tense in Greek. It means keep on being filled. Like a cup under a running tap. Not a one-time event. A daily refill.
Why? Because we leak.
By 10am we’re anxious. By noon we’re irritated. By evening we’re empty.
We can’t run on yesterday’s filling. We need fresh oil every morning.
The Holy Spirit isn’t a force. He’s a Person. John 14:16 — _“Helper.”_ He wants to go with you into meetings, traffic, parenting, and decisions.
*Starting with the Spirit does 3 things:*
1. *Direction* — Romans 8:14: _“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.”_ He’ll lead your steps before you make them.
2. *Power* — Acts 1:8: _“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you.”_ For patience, for wisdom, for self-control, Galatians 5:22-23.
3. *Peace* — John 14:26: _“He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”_ He quiets the noise.
You don’t have to earn His filling. You just have to ask and make room. Luke 11:13: _“How much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”_
Before you fill your mind with the world, fill it with Him.
*Prayer*
Holy Spirit, good morning. I don’t want to run this day on my own strength. Fill me again. Take the first of my thoughts, my breath, and my attention. Lead me today. Speak to me. Comfort me. Convict me where I need it. Empower me for what’s ahead. I surrender my schedule, my mood, and my plans to You. Be Lord over this day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
*Action for Today*
1. *First Breath Prayer*: Before you get out of bed, pray: “Holy Spirit, fill me.” 3 times. Slow.
2. *5-Minute Surrender*: Before phone or work, read Ephesians 5:18. Sit quietly and ask: “Spirit, what do You want to do in me today?”
3. *Check-In*: Set 2 alarms today labeled “Spirit Check.” Pause 30 seconds and ask, “Am I still walking with You?”
What’s one thing you’re facing today that you need the Holy Spirit’s help with first?
