*Devotional: Without Me You Can Do Nothing*
*Scripture: John 15:5*
_“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”_
*Reflection*
Jesus doesn’t say “apart from me it’s harder.”
He says _“apart from me you can do nothing.”_
Zero. Not “less fruit.” Not “tired fruit.” _Nothing_ that lasts.
He uses the picture of a vine and branches. A branch doesn’t strive to produce grapes. It just stays connected. The life in the vine flows through it.
That’s us.
We try to run businesses, marriages, ministries, and days in our own strength. We pray last. We plan first. Then we wonder why we’re dry, anxious, and empty.
*Apart from Him:*
1. *Our work burns us out* — We can build, but it won’t have His peace on it. Psalm 127:1: _“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.”_
2. *Our character leaks* — Without Him, patience runs out, love gets conditional, and joy depends on circumstances.
3. *Our fruit fades* — We can get results, but not Kingdom fruit that remains. John 15:16
*Abiding in Him:*
_“Whoever abides in me... bears much fruit.”_
Abide = stay, remain, keep close. Not perfection. Just connection.
Morning prayer. Scripture. Whispering His name in the middle of the day. Saying, “Jesus, I need You for this.”
He’s not asking you to do more for Him today. He’s asking you to do it _with_ Him.
You are a branch. Your job isn’t to produce. Your job is to stay plugged in to the Vine.
*Prayer*
Jesus, You are the Vine and I am the branch. Forgive me for trying to live, work, and love apart from You. Today I choose to abide. Fill me, lead me, speak through me. I can’t parent without You. I can’t work without You. I can’t forgive without You. Apart from You I can do nothing — but with You, I can bear fruit. Hold me close today. In Your name, Amen.
*Action for Today*
1. *Vine Check*: Before one task today — a call, an errand, a conversation — pause and pray: “Jesus, I can’t do this without You. Do it through me.”
2. *Cut the dead branch*: What’s one thing you’ve been striving in alone? Lay it down and invite Him into it.
3. *Fruit Watch*: Tonight ask, “Where did I see Jesus’ life come through me today?” Write it down. That’s the Vine at work.
What area of your life are you trying to do without Him right now? Let’s bring it back to the Vine.
