How to be a Disciple of Christ

Being Christ's Disciple

"Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples." Jh 15:8

Being Christ's Disciple signifies one's commitment to following Jesus Christ and living according to His teachings. This emphasizes the importance of bearing much fruit in order to bring glory to God the Father.

In John 15, Jesus uses the analogy of a vine and its branches to illustrate the relationship between Himself and His followers. He portrays Himself as the true vine and His disciples as the branches. Just as branches draw their sustenance and life from the vine, believers derive their spiritual life and nourishment from their union with Christ.

In verse 8, Jesus' statement reveals two significant aspects:

Glorifying the Father: Jesus affirms that the purpose of bearing much fruit is to bring glory to God the Father. Fruitfulness in the life of a disciple is not solely for personal gain or recognition but primarily for magnifying and honoring God. By living out the teachings of Jesus, demonstrating His love, and manifesting His character and attributes in their lives, disciples bring glory to God.

Identifying as Disciples: Jesus declares that by bearing much fruit, the disciples demonstrate that they are truly His followers. In other words, the evidence of genuine discipleship lies in the fruitful life that is marked by obedience to Christ's teachings, active love for others, and the transformation of character by the power of the Holy Spirit. A disciple of Christ is not merely someone who professes belief in Jesus but actively follows Him and produces the fruit of righteousness in their life.

Therefore, being Christ's Disciple, as expressed in John 15:8, encapsulates the commitment to glorify God through a fruitful life and the sincere dedication to imitate Christ's teachings and embody His character. It is a title that carries the responsibility and privilege of representing Jesus to the world through acts of love, service, and obedience, ultimately bringing glory to God the Father.
